As I sat and made cupcakes for my cousin as a favor (for bachelorette party), it really dawned on me that food truly is the way I show my love.
I've never been the type to want to cuddle or kiss in public or even say " I LOVE YOU" all that often but I'm sure as hell always ready to make something or give you something that will fill your belly. I used to get taken aback when my boyfriend said he wasn't getting enough affection from me. I'd think:"but I just cooked him dinner last night and then made sure he had coffee for his early work day. I give him homemade pasta sauce made with tomatoes from my moms summer garden and this kid rather have a hug?!?" It's not strange that if I know I won't see him for a day, he'll receive a small package with some sort of baked good on his nightstand. Basically-if I love you, I'll say in with a cupcake or a pizza or I'll have stopped at your favorite coffee spot to pick you up your caffeine fix. A hug...ah, let's have that chocolate croissant instead.
I'm not saying don't hug...hugs are great but it's just not my #1 preference how to illustrate my love. There's something special about making someone a meal-there's just so much love in it- you can taste it and feel it. Imagine not having food at your next celebration. I mean, do you ever feel more love in a Hallmark card vs. sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner in front of a family-made potluck tour de force?
When I love you, I want to take care of you. I want to give your nourishment. I put all those " I love you's" into my cooking. That's why I spend 2 hours peeling tomatoes for my sauce instead of opening a jar Progresso. That's why i make sure I only get turkey or chicken Friskies because that's what the kitties like to eat. I dare not prsent a fish pâté or I can count myself out for cuddles in the morning.
